Wood has always been part of life for me.
I got my first wooden workbench from Grandpa K when I was six years old. It was the same year he taught me the basics on the lathe. Not only did he imprint in me that every tool had a place (and that it was to always be in its place), but I learned what value there is in upcycling and repurposing wood from every conceivable source.
I was always amazed at the tables, chairs, lamps and grandfather clocks that came out of his workshop, even though he never actually purchased any wood.
Upcycling and repurposing wasn't Kitsch and fashionable like it is today, but Grandpa could find and hoard wood like no other, and there was always an entertaining story to each piece.
The basics learned from Grandpa K stayed with me and manifest themselves today as one of the core values of KARV Woodworx, where I go to great effort to recover timber from tree felling, storms and landfills. I mill it, dry it and then use it to create unique custom pieces of furniture and art.
Reading, writing and arithmetic were not really my strong points at school, but woodwork was! I was blessed to have three of the finest woodwork masters during my high school, who each had a part in teaching me design and practical skills which laid a beautiful foundation for where I am today.
When I started college, I earned money by working for a tree care company, as a tree climber. One day while waiting for a truck I started cutting a log and it seemed to turn out actually looking like some sort of raptor. The boss told the local chainsaw supplier, and next they asked me to do it again at an agricultural show to create a bit of interest. That in turn led on to many more shows, demonstrations and commissions. Chainsaw carving became a mini job over the years.
Running my own tree care company meant not only could I enjoy practicing as a certified arborist, but I also had access to many pieces of beautiful wood for carving and milling. Wood which would otherwise head to the chipper or burn pile. Grandpa K would have approved of my wood hoarding skills!
My tree care company continued as my main job, with commissions on the side, until I returned from Europe. I decided to do something great with the huge stacks of slabs and wood in the yard, to create pieces of beauty like Grandpa K did, each with a unique story.
That is where Karv Woodworx became my fulltime passion.
